Composer, Sayo Kosugi, acclaimed for her “extraordinary sensibility and universal appeal” (Ad Lib. Magazine), is recognized as one of Japan’s leading composers of her generation, and is the recipient of the 2014 Palmer Dixon Prize for Most Outstanding Composition presented by The Juilliard School in New York.

Several recent highly respected commissions and awards have raised Ms. Kosugi’s profile worldwide. She had international commissions include works for The Genée International Ballet Competition, commissioned by Royal Academy of Dance (London, UK) ; a work in collaboration with noted choreographer Ricardo Amarante for The Royal Opera Ballet of Vlaanderen (Antwerp, Belgium), premiered and toured in Belgium cities.

She is currently touring with the Asia-America Institute for New Music with her work, Lilac Nova for violin and chamber orchestra, performed by violinist Ryu Goto in Beijing, New York, Los Angeles, Bangkok, Singapore, Korea, Japan and Vietnam. Metropolitan Opera tenor Keith Jameson recorded and perform at international festivals her song cycle, Three Wishes In Time of Rain, commissioned by and written for Mr. Jameson. And her score to a film, Hotel Copain, directed by Naoto Monma, has been presented in movie theaters.

Other recently completed works include “Voicarion” theater play series by Toho worked as a music director and composer,  Favrile/Essential Shift, commissioned by the New York City Ballet’s Choreographic Institute and written in collaboration with choreographer, Ricardo Amarante; Lilac Nova for violin and large orchestra, performed by Alex Shiozaki and The Juilliard Orchestra under the baton of Jeffrey Milarsky at Alice Tully Hall of Lincoln Center; several solo and chamber works, including Spiraling Sparks for violin and piano and Nebula, blooming for solo harp ; film scores to Krysten Resnick’s Benny and Jack Flying Machine and Michael Bates’ The Projectionist ; and music for a documentary film on the Japanese tradition of Yabusame / Kiba-Dakyu / Kemari which was dedicated and preserved for the Imperial Court of Japan.

Ms. Kosugi has also composed and actively performed at many international events and shows, including the award ceremonies for the International Figure Skating Championships, FIFA World Cup, World Baseball Classics, and fashion shows of Cartier, Dior, Vivienne Westwood, and Shiseido. She has given over 1000 live performances throughout Japan, and three of her albums have sold more than 50,000 copies to date, topping sales charts at Tower Records and HMV Japan. Ms. Kosugi also composes for film, television, and commercials aired on major Japanese national networks such as Fuji TV and NHK.

Ms. Kosugi is a graduate of The Juilliard School where she earned her Master of Music degree in composition under the guidance of Robert Beaser.

ベルギー王立フランダースバレエ団の２０１５シーズン新作 In Flanders Fields の音楽を書き下ろし、ベルギーでのツアー全１３公演は、ファイナンシャルタイムズ誌、フランダーストゥデイ誌、ダンスヨーロッパ誌、ダンスタイムズ誌など多くのレビューで高い評価を得た。また、英国ロイヤルアカデミーオブダンスの委嘱により、世界で最も権威ある国際バレエコンクール、The Genée International Ballet Competition２０１４年最終選考の男女それぞれの課題曲を作曲。２０１４年ロイヤルフランダースバレエ『Choreo Lab』では４曲に新作振付で公演されたほか、２０１４年ニューヨークシティバレエxジュリアードのスペシャルイベント委嘱により、振付師リカルド•アマランテのバレエ作品Essential Shift の音楽を手がけ、英国イングリッシュナショナルバレエスクール、カザフスタン国立アスタナバレエのヨーロッパツアーでも再演される。

また、バイオリニスト五嶋龍氏による演奏で、Lilac Novaの室内楽版を米国Delos MusicよりCD発売。同楽曲を北京にて初演の後、タイ国際作曲音楽祭、ニューヨーク、ロサンゼルス、シンガポール、ベトナム、韓国、日本（沖縄・京都）の音楽祭等で演奏された。

ニューヨークのメトロポリタンオペラのテノール、 Keith Jameson委嘱作品Three Wishes in Time Of Rain、その他、ジュリアードオーケストラ作曲コンペティションで新作Lilac Nova for solo violin and large orchestra が選ばれ、２０１４年にリンカーンセンターのアリスタリーホールで、ミラースキー氏指揮ジュリアードオーケストラにより初演された。また、イタリア人ピアニスト、ジュゼッペ•アンダローロと新日本フィルコンサートマスター西江辰郎氏の委嘱作品『スパイラリング•スパークス』の初演が東京と仙台で行われた他、『ビヨンド・ザ・マシーン』フェスティバル（ニューヨーク）にて上映された短編無声映画The Projectionist（Micheal Bates監督•豪）と、２０１４年同フェスティバル上映作品Benny and Jack Flying Machine (Krysten Resnick監督•英）の音楽を作曲した。

その他、米国ピーボディ・エセックス博物館（マサチューセツ州）、アジアパシフィック博物館（ロサンゼルス）、クレステッド•ビューテ音楽祭（コロラド州）、ニューヨークメトロポリスアンサンブル、フィラデルフィアチェンバーミュージックソサエティ、サードアングルニューミュージック（ポートランド州）の新作委嘱など、全米とヨーロッパ各国のコンサートや音楽祭、博物館や美術館のショーのために、ソロ、室内楽、オーケストラの新曲を発表し、国際的に活動している。

日本国内では、東宝演劇の音楽朗読劇Voicarion（藤沢文翁脚本・演出）『女王がいた客室』『Mr.Prisoner』『ゴーストクラブ』『ル・レーヴ』『スプーンの盾』の作曲・音楽監督を担当。また、めざましテレビ・めざましアクア両番組（フジテレビ）２０１５年度オープニングテーマ曲、フジテレビ『プロ野球ニュース』（２０１８〜現在）２０１６年公開映画ホテルコパン（門馬直人監督）のサントラを作曲。日本の皇室に献上される映像作品シリーズ『騎馬打毬』『流鏑馬』ほか、シリーズ作の音楽を作曲。（霞会館・共同テレビ作）

また、日本最大級の音楽 xファッションイベント　ガールズアワード２０１５春夏コレクションの音楽制作のほか、テレビ朝日『題名のない音楽会』出演など日本でも幅広い分野で活動を行う。

国立音楽大学ピアノ科を卒業後、自身が作曲とピアノを務めるグループ『MODEA』を結成。２００３年から０８年までの５年間で１０００公演を行い、５枚のオリジナルCDは、国内大手CD店の売り上げチャートにおいて、同時に４つのジャンルで１位を獲得。NHK『ザ☆スター』テレビ東京『レディス４』『朝だ！生です旅サラダ』オープニング曲、テレビ番組のオープニング曲に数々の起用される他、企業やブランドのテーマ音楽（シブヤ西武テーマ曲やキャンペーン楽曲）、フジテレビ製作映像作品『夜もみじ』等、映像作品の音楽を作曲。カルティエ、ディオール、資生堂等のショーやイベントや、ワールドベースボールクラシック、国際フィギュア選手権大会等国際イベントのセレモニー演奏でも活躍した。
